I am inclined to get a newer cable but am looking for recommendations from the community.PS, I dont know if it is an actual rule, but its always easier to state converters with the side that goes into your computer first, ie.Serial to USB sounds like plugging a cable into a Serial port on your computer and then something that uses a USB on the other end, but I dont think that is what you meant.Typically you want to look for an adapter with an FTDI chip and not the older Prolific chip.
Manhattan Usb To Serial Serial To USBI dont think anyone would ever read, say serial to USB and think - why would you have something plugged into your laptopdesktops serial port going to USB - I expect 99.9 of people who have worked in IT for a few years would know that is nonsense, and would convert the comment in their mind - without worrying about how it had been written. Back on topic though, and out of bah humbug mode - Serial to USB (or USB to Serial for the 00.1) converters can be a bit hit and miss, from my experience - even all the way back to Windows XP. But a 1 to StarTech or StarCom here, as both of those have been okay. They dont cost a lot, theyre always available at vendors if you need more, and they just work. Manhattan Usb To Serial Windows 10 Drivers AndManhattan Usb To Serial Drivers And NoI had an older ioGear one that worked with XPVista and 7, but had issues with Win 10, so got the Startech one to try and got the Windows 10 drivers and no issues with this or my Mac either. Although these things are cheap, a driver update may resolve it without requiring you to spend time buying another one. There are a lot of USB to Serial adapters available on Ebay, but many of them do not work on Windows 10 because the support for one of the chipsets was removed from the Windows 10 code base. If there are current Windows 10 drivers available for your existing adapter, then it should be supported however I suspect you will find that the chipset in your original adapter is the Prolific one and therefore not supported.
